UIMA develops, utilizes and encourages artistic talent through exhibitions, concerts, readings, lectures and films to serve the cultural needs of our community and city, and thereby strengthen cultural understanding and diversity.

Black Women and Clay: Artist Talk and Q&A

Black Women and Clay is an exhibition highlighting the remarkable yet often overlooked contributions of Black female ceramic artists in Chicago. Honoring pioneers like Marva Lee Pitchford-Jolly and Eselean Goree Henderson while celebrating contemporary voices, the show traces connections to African ceramic traditions and global masters such as Ladi Kwali and Magdalene Odundo.

From Darkness to Light

From Darkness to Light, created by five-year-old Sonya Liakh, is currently on exhibit in our East Gallery. Sonya lost her eyesight after her chemotherapy was cut short because of the vicious war. Together with her mother, sister, and brother, she found refuge at the City of Goodness, where she also discovered a new way to see the world — through photography.

The Magic of Light
November 8, 1 pm
On Saturday November 8 at 1 PM Yara Arts Group from New York will present a special afternoon at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago.Yara will launch a new book, “The Magic of Light,” which includes the script, pictures of Yara’s new show and its background. The show was created by director Virlana Tkacz, puppeteer and designer Tom Lee and epic singer Julian Kytasty. The story is told by twenty puppets created by Tom Lee and one epic sung by Julian Kytasty.

This December, we are thrilled to host our 5th Maker’s Market for creators of all backgrounds, experience levels & mediums.
Vendors will have the opportunity to share their own forms of craft in booths in our gallery space. This market will platform emerging & established creators to sell their work, grow their business, and join our community. It will be a celebration of all the forms that art takes!
