Over the past year, everyone including UIMA, has been affected by the war in Ukraine. Since February, the Institute has shifted focus to providing mutual humanitarian aid through fundraising and educational initiations, while still honoring our core mission of bridging cultural diversity through artistic expression.
To maximize the fundraising efforts we've been functioning off of our operational reserve funds as a result of our Ukrainian aid efforts. We are asking for your help now, to support us as we venture into the new year and hope to continue serving the Ukrainian community.
Please consider supporting UIMA's efforts by buying a ticket, or making a donation. Along with an exceptional program for the evening featuring acclaimed Ukrainian-American artist Ola Rondiak as the keynote speaker, Serhiy FOMA Fomenko, a Ukrainian fusion folk singer from the band Mandry, as a special musical guest.
Along with cocktails and dinner, an online auction will be held, featuring pieces from our archive as well as an Ola Rondiak original.

CHICAGO’S UKRAINIAN INSTITUTE OF MODERN ART PARTNERS WITH VIRTUAL CONCERT HALLS TO HOST A LIVE GLOBAL INTERNET BROADCAST TO BENEFIT UNICEF USA
CHICAGO’S UKRAINIAN INSTITUTE OF MODERN ART PARTNERS WITH VIRTUAL CONCERT HALLS TO HOST A LIVE GLOBAL INTERNET BROADCAST TO BENEFIT UNICEF USA
All Funds Raised will Support Emergency and Humanitarian Aid for Ukrainian Families and Children Suffering from the
Devastation of War
Wednesday, April 13, 2022
5:00am- 11:00pm CT
Chicago - On April 13, 2022, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) is partnering with Virtual Concert Halls (VCHS), a Virginia-based ITV producer, to host a global online fundraising effort to benefit UNICEF USA, who are committed to providing emergency aid to families and children in Ukraine. The event will stream to multiple social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Twitch and LinkedIn.
Virtual Concert Halls will take the 18-hour live Internet Web stream from 5:00 a.m. to 11 p.m. CT from the Institute’s gallery and distribute it live to major social media platforms. Virtual Concert Halls streams live events from all over the world and are experts at streaming simultaneously on multiple social media platforms.
Throughout the broadcast, news anchors will interview a wide variety of people who are close to the situation in Ukraine including historians, scholars, lawmakers, young Ukrainian refugees who recently arrived in Chicago, among others.
UNICEF has been in Ukraine for 25 years—and it is on the ground now, delivering safe water, health and hygiene supplies, blankets, warm clothes and psycho-social care to children and their families.
Security is especially crucial during this time when many children and youth are separated from their families which leaves them in indescribably vulnerable. Donations are accepted any time before, during, and after the live stream at:
According to a recent statement by UNICEF USA, two million children have now been forced to flee Ukraine, as the war rages on. “The situation inside Ukraine is spiraling,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “As the number of children fleeing their homes continues to climb, we must remember that every single one of them needs protection, education, safety and support.”
In a joint statement, Motria Melnyk, President of the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art and Marta Farion, Vice President said, "The war in Ukraine is breaking all of our hearts and so the opportunity to make our facility the staging area for this amazing fundraising effort was enthusiastically welcomed by our board and staff." In addition to her work at the Ukrainian Institute, Farion is also the president of the Kyiv-Mohyla Foundation of America.
Virtual Concert Halls co-founder, Anna Ouspenskaya, said, “We are deeply touched and honored to be included in this project. People on our team come from different continents and backgrounds, but many of us share one thing in common: we carry scars and pains of being raised in the countries of the former Soviet bloc, or have relatives who endured the horrors of that terrible regime. Working on this project is the least we can do for Ukrainians who are enduring unimaginable pain. My colleagues at VCHS and I myself are putting our whole hearts into this effort.”
HELPING UNICEF IN UKRAINE is spearheaded by veteran public radio broadcaster, Steve Robinson, President of New Media Productions. In 2003 for the victims of the tsunami and again in 2010 for victims of the earthquake in Haiti, Steve organized all-day fundraisers in involving virtually all Chicago television and radio stations that each raised $3 million in humanitarian assistance. “I hope this 18-hour continuous stream raises millions of dollars for UNICEF in this emergency,” Robinson said. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Robinson_(executive)

Wanting it Both Ways Opening Reception Weekend
CHICAGO, IL–The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is delighted to announce a new group exhibition titled Wanting it Both Ways, featuring mixed media works by Bill Conger, Tanya Hastings Gill, Mie Kongo, and Jennifer Mannebach.
Opening Reception Hours:
Friday, April 8 - 6-9 pm
Saturday, April 9, 12-6 pm
Sunday, April 10, 12-4 pm
Before it became synonymous with a defect or shortcoming, the etymology of the word “flaw” related to a fragment, splinter, or piece of something, and was closely associated with the idea of a stray ember. A fragment or “flaw” as a spark, a glowing ember, is an incendiary condition quite different from the more typical notion of a fragment as a leftover or remnant.
These insistent fragments may preserve a fleeting moment or memory; something that is not embalmed in time but is a flickering touchstone to revisit and find more–more permutations, more iterations, and more potentialities. These artists contend with the desire to capture a sense of the fugitive, often manifesting in fragmented forms that speak to the interdependence of things. They are acutely aware of how small altercations can shift things substantially, looking at the interplay of material identities, as well as the relationship between the maker and the materials.
This practice of working with forms and ideas can result in work that can feel like a temporary capture— revealing the desire to have it both ways, to hold still for a moment in time, just long enough to see what gathers at the edges before releasing it into another recombinant state.

(Online, March 31 to April 14, 2022 12 p.m. ET)—Impact: Artists in Support of Refugees from Ukraine is an arts fundraiser to be hosted by Artsy online marketplace with the institutional partnership of the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, Chicago. The art world unites for this benefit to support refugees from Ukraine in the largest arts fundraiser of its kind. It uniquely raises cultural awareness of contemporary Ukrainian artists. The art sale features over 120 lots valuing at nearly $1 million. In a show of solidarity, many prestigious artists joined the cause, such as Samira Abbassy, Leilah Babirye, Sarah Faux, Zaria Forman, Jeffrey Gibson, Tom LaDuke, Steve ESPO Powers, Walid Raad, James Rosenquist, and Annegret Soltau. The benefit includes work from notable galleries Winston Wachter, Monya Rowe, Hesse Flatow, Victoria Miro, and Miles McEnery. The fundraiser crosses generational and representational divides to unite for humanitarian aid. Cultural awareness and the artistic preservation of Ukrainians uniquely defines this sale, as almost half of the participating artists are from Ukraine or of Ukrainian descent. The sale represents the largest international, contemporary collection of Ukrainian artists. Artist highlights include Inka Essenhigh, Lina Condes, Open Group, who represented Ukraine at the 2019 Venice Biennale, and Nikita Kadan, who is currently taking refuge in Voloshyn Gallery in Kyiv, which has been
converted back into a Soviet-era bomb shelter. Proceeds from the sale go directly toward four respected grassroots nonprofits: Razom (direct war and refugee crisis support), Insight NGO (LGBTQ Ukrainians), Fight for Right (Ukrainians with disabilities), and The Ukrainian Art Emergency Fund (direct artist support). Artsy.net will be donating all their proceeds directly to the USA for UNHCR. The curation of this sale was made possible through the efforts of curators Katrina Majkut, Nina Mdivani, and Adrienne Kochman of UIMA and members of the Ukrainian Artists and Allies League.

Naturally Artist Talk
CHICAGO, IL—- The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is delighted to announce Naturally Artist Talk opening on March 12, 2022 featuring works by Judith Roston Freilich and Lilach Schrag who have come together for their first joint exhibition. Masks are required for attendance.
Fascinated by forces of nature and mind, Judith Roston Freilich and Lilach Schrag examine, each in her own way, essence, energy, and evolution. Judith Roston Freilich’s works on paper and textiles were inspired by her aspirations to integrate the arts into everyday life. Throughout her life, Roston Freilich’s home and works have always centered around the cycles of life and the natural offerings of every season. The vital consequences of climate change and the COVID-19 virus have impacted the artist’s work, and aspires that her artistic creation will act as a springboard for awareness towards scientific ways that aim to heal our planet. With images and materials drawn from both her natural and domestic environment, Lilach Schrag uses organic found objects, fabric, paper, enamel, and acrylic paints, charcoal, graphite, threads, pins, and staples in making large-scale energy-packed paintings with epic figures and creatures transforming into each other and into vegetation. Layered, camouflaged, and not immediately identified, they convey a sense of awe, urgency, determination, and vulnerability. The natural materials rich with texture, meaning, and previous life sends Schrag on a fantastic flight, and at the same time keeping her grounded in this physical world.

Rituals Opening Reception
CHICAGO, IL—The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is pleased to announce the opening of Rituals on December 4th, 2021 featuring works by artists Brenton Good, Mandy Cano-Villalobos, and Marissa Voytenko who have come together for their first joint exhibition. The present age has been defined by shirking customs, breaking traditions, and celebrating the informal. Yet it is through formal, practiced and ceremonial-like actions that contemporary artists Good, Cano-Villalobos, and Voytenko have found their expression. Though their work is varied in medium and approach, the three artists regard ritual as an integral part of their work.
Artists will be present Saturday between 1:00-3:00 pm.

Kandinsky: The Rediscovered Bauhaus Sketchbook Opening Reception
CHICAGO, IL—Chicago - The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is pleased to announce Kandinsky: The Rediscovered Bauhaus Sketchbook, an exhibition featuring 15 pages of a newly authenticated sketchbook used by the artist Wassily Kandinsky in 1922, when he was teaching at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany. On view from October 16 through November 7, 2021, the exhibition will make available to the public the only loose pages from the 43-page sketchbook possible, without damage to the sketchbook itself. Kandinsky: The Rediscovered Bauhaus Sketchbook is presented in partnership with the National Museum “Kyiv Art Gallery” in Kyiv, Ukraine and is made possible through the generosity of the Khodorkovsky Family, the sketchbook’s owner.
Wassily Kandinsky (Moscow, 1866 - Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, 1944) is one of the most noted artists of the 20th century. An artist, art theorist and educator, he is often credited as a pioneer of abstraction. Kandinsky spent his youth in Odessa, Ukraine, graduating from the Grekov Odessa Art School. He then attended the University of Moscow, where he studied law and economics, from 1886-1892. He declined a teaching position in his field in Dorpat, today Tartu, Estonia in 1896 and moved to Munich to study art, first with Anton Azbe, followed by Franz von Stuck. While in Munich, Kandinsky began to move towards abstraction. He is widely known for his work with German artist Franz Marc (1880-1916) for the publication of the Blue Rider Almanach and its related exhibitions. His 1911 treatise Concerning the Spiritual in Art continues to be an important resource explaining the inner life of the artist and its relationship to non-objective forms. His forced return to Russia at the onset of World War I in 1914 was short-lived. He returned to Germany after the war and assumed a teaching position with the Bauhaus, where he remained until its closure by the Nazi government in 1933. Kandinsky then left for France, where he remained until his death. The sketchbook’s rediscovery corrects previous issues concerning the absence of known personal sketchbooks by the artist from 1922-1927. Provenance history suggests the existence of additional sketchbooks, as yet to be found.
For further inquiries, a book (hardback) documenting the authentication process will be available for purchase for $35 with an introduction by Nuno Viana. In addition to reproductions of all the sketches themselves, expert reports by Lisa Florman, Reinhold Heller, Dmytro Horbachev, and Maria Valyaeva, are reprinted. A technical examination and analysis report from the Conservation Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC.) is also included.

Abstraction As Metaphor Artist Talk
Abstraction as Metaphor Artist Talk with Corey Postiglione and Kathie Shaw
moderated by Dr. Adrienne Kochman
June 5, 2021
1-2 p.m.
CHICAGO, IL—We are thrilled to welcome our community into our galleries for an in person artist talk with Corey Postiglione and Kathie Shaw in conjunction with their current exhibition, Abstraction as Metaphor, which is now on view through June 20th. Moderated by UIMA curator Dr. Adrienne Kochman, this talk provides the opportunity to view the exhibition while also gaining context into the works and insight into the artists’ processes.
In this informal artist talk, Postiglione and Shaw will use props, such as tools from their shared studio, to give the audience a glimpse into how their works are created and the concepts that fuel them. From what it’s like to share a studio space to the metaphorical meanings of their abstract works, the discussion will cover a breadth of topics and will also welcome questions from the audience.
The works in Abstraction as Metaphor are not only about itself and the sheer formal optical experience uncomplicated by any outside issues. Postiglione and Shaw’s use of abstract imagery readily embraces issues such as themes of globalization and the resultant dynamics of societal, cultural, and environmental degradation. All of this metaphoric content is represented in the language of abstract art.
Postiglione and Shaw have been fortunate to share a studio, where they interact around ideas, techniques and motivations. Although different stylistically, the consequences of a shared space are essential to both artists.
The artist talk will be recorded in its entirety and will be posted to the UIMA YouTube page after the event.

Abstraction as Metaphor Opening Reception
Painting, including abstraction, has probably been around too long to hold surprises, at least in the area of pictorial innovation, which was its hallmark historically. This could be regarded as the current challenge for abstraction in particular. Whereas painting continues unabated with no signs of disappearing, the question remains how to make it vital, not only in terms of pictorial seduction, but also in the area of content. This is one of the particular dilemmas for abstraction.
Corey Postiglione and Kathie Shaw have been fortunate to share a studio, where they interact around ideas, techniques and motivations. Although different stylistically, the consequence of a shared space are essential to both artists.

Not Afraid Opening Reception Weekend
In their two-person exhibition, Not Afraid, Janice Elkins and Gina Lee Robbins have created a symphony of canvases, sculptures and installations that render the human experience in abstracted, yet vividly emotional ways. Using bold imagery, fractured form, and rich layers of texture, Elkins and Robbins have captured an uncensored psychological response to these restrictive and bewildering times.

Work, People, Art Opening Reception Weekend
The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is proud to present Work, People, Art in partnership with the Illinois State Museum. The exhibition features 38 paintings, prints, and photographs made under the Federal Art Project (FAP) from the Illinois State Museum’s permanent collection.
